South Kensington offers a fascinating combination of fashionable modern London life and stately Victorian architecture.
Great landmarks include the Science Museum, National History Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Royal Albert Hall and the Albert Memorial. The South Kensington Museums were founded after the Great Exhibition of 1851. The exhibition consisted of vast and wonderful artefacts from all over the British Empire and the rest of the world. Later, the exhibited pieces of art, crafts and scientific discoveries formed the basis of the various museum collections.
The Royal Albert Hall opened in 1871 and since opening has been the stage for over 150,000 performances. The hall has a long and rich history as one of the worlds leading entertaining venues. On March 24th 1912, it was here that the Titanic Band Memorial Concert took place. The event included 500 musicians and performers and has been recorded as the greatest professional orchestra ever assembled.
